ROCKLEDGE —Karen Montas’s journey from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to her current role as a respected attorney in Brevard County, Florida, showcases her strong determination and deep passion for justice.
When Karen was 10, she and her family moved to Palm Bay, Florida, where they faced challenges adjusting to a new culture.
“We moved to Palm Bay because we had family friends there who were engineers at Lockheed and Rockwell Collins,” Karen said. “It was a humbling experience, coming from Santo Domingo, where I had a different perception of Florida, mostly from visiting Disney World. Living in a friend’s garage in the Florida heat was a shock but also a time filled with learning and adjustment.”
Karen grew up in a tight knit family that instilled the value of hard work. Her parents were a doctor and a computer programmer who instilled the value of education in Karen and her siblings and supported their dreams.
Karen did well in school at The King’s Academy, working hard and enjoying her studies. Karen became the school mascot, a proud representative of the Lion at football games and marching band events.
At first, Karen aimed for a pre-medical career at Palm Beach Atlantic University, but she changed direction when she found her passion for law after struggling with organic chemistry.
“I loved the sciences, but organic chemistry was a roadblock for me,” Karen admitted. “It was a tough decision to switch my major to English, but I enjoyed the critical thinking and interpretation involved in literature.”
Inspired by her early experiences working at a local law firm, where she started as a runner delivering legal documents, Karen decided to redirect her career toward the legal profession.
Encouraged by mentors in the field, Karen pursued her Juris Doctor at Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad College of Law in Fort Lauderdale. Karen was an exceptional student in law school where she was also involved in student government. It was during this time that she developed an interest in civil litigation and advocacy. “I went to Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad College of Law in Fort Lauderdale,” Karen remembered. “Law school was challenging, but I found my niche in civil litigation, focusing on areas like personal injury and medical malpractice.”
After passing the Florida Bar exam on her first attempt, Karen started her career with Cole, Scott and Kissane in West Palm Beach where she honed her civil litigation skills. Seeking new opportunities and a chance to broaden her experience, Karen moved to Orlando and became an attorney with Conroy, Simberg, Ganon, Krevins & Abel, where she defended insurance companies and corporations in complex litigation.
In 2009, Karen decided she wanted to be part of a new community and moved to Brevard County. She immediately began building her client base as a highly-skilled and professional attorney, as well as making a name for herself as an attorney that would leave no stone unturned for her clients. During this time, she was named managing partner of the firm where she was employed.
“I enjoy living in Brevard. It’s a great community with a small-town feeling,” Montas said. “And as an attorney, there’s a level of professionalism here that doesn’t exist everywhere.”
In order to be able to provide undivided attention and focus on her clients and their legal matters, Karen became one of the founding members of the firm Johnson & Montas P.A. This firm quickly became known for handling personal injury, medical malpractice, general liability, automobile, trucking and rideshare liability claims. Karen’s hard work and focus on her clients’ needs has played a large role in the success of the firm.
In addition to her career, Karen is also very close with her family and her roots. Karen is very thankful for the unwavering support she received from her parents and siblings. Their continued support and belief in Karen’s capabilities have been great motivating factors for her to continue working hard and making a difference in the community.
